Anyone with any sort of gadget that requires rechargeable batteries knows that battery life is oftentimes an issue, especially on those long trips. Coupled with the long recharge times, electronics often become more cumbersome than they should be. That is soon to change though with the introduction of the hydrogen powered fuel cell.
A Canadian company called Angstrom Power Inc. has created a hydrogen powered fuel cell battery for use in electronics. Their invention, which was unveiled at CES, was shown in cellular phones. Previous attempts at the technology resulted in a bulky battery but this new version is the same size as standard lithium-ion batteries. The battery has twice the battery life as standard batteries and can be recharged in 10 minutes as opposed to a couple of hours. Many electronics manufacturers showed interest in the new technology and want to incorporate it into future products. One of the factors interfering with the widespread use of the tech is the need for hydrogen refueling stations. Instead of charging the battery, the hydrogen is replenished requiring hydrogen refueling stations to be readily available. In order to fix that problem, the company is designing a recharging station for your home which requires the user to put water in the unit in order for it to recharge products. It seems like a good idea but we’ll see how it all turns out. It’d definitely be more eco-friendly than then standard methods of using hard-wired electricity. The technology is said to be available to the public in 2010.
