Life in Canada – In Canada Even the Panhandlers have Unions

The Panhandler’s Union Symbol

In Canada, even the panhandlers (homeless) have unions. A union!

What does a panhandling union fight for? The Ottawa panhandlers union is currently organized in order to tear down a fence… literally. More to come.

The Ottawa panhandlers union hired an Ottawa lawyer (Yavar Hameed) to apply for a court injunction concerning a fence under an overpass. The fense was put up as a part of a $25,000 project designed to increase the safety of the city. The wrought iron fence was erected in the “Rideau Street-Colonel By Drive underpass,” and the homeless don’t like it!

Apparently, it’s a violation of human rights to put up a fence and increase lighting in an area to improve the safety in the underpass.

Of course, the question on everyone’s minds is do panhandlers unions ever strike? Are their panhandling strikebreakers or scabs? Who is the president?
