“Look ma, no hands!” - British Cop Banned From Driving For TWO Stupid Stunts

February 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Police officer Giving Thumbs Up

David Mayes, communicating with his hands at 68mph.

For some reason, the British people have been providing some really interesting news lately, from the castle hidden behind hay for 4 years, the foster mom from hell, and the chimp who beat a British memory whiz.

Now, a British cop has upped the ante… read more details after the jump!

In a poor choice of career move, David Mayes decided to drive past a police camera driving 68mph, with both thumbs in the air and off the steering wheel. The speed camera took a nice little incriminating photo of the act. However, just an hour later, David made another bad career move, doing the exact same thing, but upping his speed another 5mph to 73mph. I bet he wouldn’t be in trouble if he did that with his hands on the wheels at least, not blatantly staring at the camera.

Obviously, David’s actions kind of annoyed some people. Everyone and his or her mother wanted to chime in:

  • Magistrate Andrew Entwistle told him: “You exhibited a blatant disregard for the safety of other road users.”
  • Claire Armstrong, of Safe Speed said: “How fortunate for this officer that nothing worse came of this. Such behaviour from a policeman, to whom we should be able to look up and respect, only increases the already floundering respect with which the public perceive the police.”
  • A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “His conduct fell well below what we and the public expect and he now faces misconduct proceedings. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated.”
  • Lorna Jackson, of the charity Brake, said: “It goes to show that the culture of excessive speed and disregard for the lives of others extends to some police officers - many of whom regularly work with the tragic consequences of such behaviour and should know better.”
  • Tom Nutter, defending, said his client was full of remorse. “It was an episode of complete stupidity and his behaviour was wholly uncharacteristic.”
  • Porky Pig: “I’m g-g-g-going to catch that c-c-c-c-cop and give him a p-p-p-piece of my mind!”

We say, “Wow, you are not the sharpest Crayola in the box, not the shinest pearl in the sea!”

He was banned from driving for six months and fined 400 pounds, admitting to two charges of careless driving. He has also been removed from frontline duties, and faces an internal inquiry and the chance of losing his job.

Really. Smart. Cop.
