Kid Cop - “Locking up scum since ‘02″
In an example of monumentally stupid behavior, after installing red and blue lights on his car, a teenager decided to try and pull over a car. Unfortunately for the youth, the car just happened to have an off-duty cop inside. Who knows what he was trying to do, but obviously it didn’t work, and now he’s in deep legal trouble.
So what exactly happened? Details after the jump.
The story is from the Quad-City Times:
It was shortly after midnight Jan. 20 when an off-duty Mercer County Sheriff’s deputy and his wife pulled onto the Milan Beltway from Airport Road in Moline. Suddenly, flashing lights appeared in the rearview mirror.
But something wasn’t right. The deputy did not pull over. He called 911.
A female officer from the Milan Police Department happened to be nearby and responded. She pulled over the car with the flashing lights and found 17-year-old David Leib behind the wheel.
“He had the strobes and the red and blue lights, which are representative of the colors of an emergency vehicle,” Milan Police Chief Mark Beckwith said. “Probably anybody else would have pulled over, thinking it was an emergency vehicle.
“It’s an odd case, and we’re fortunate the individual he attempted to stop was an off-duty police officer.”
Now the teenager faces a felony charge of impersonating a police officer and another for having red/white/oscillating/flashing lights in use in his personal vehicle. That’s pretty hefty
After hearing about stories of people impersonating cops to commit crimes like robbery and rape, I really wonder what was motivating this kid to do what he was doing. He did not even have a weapon, a badge, and he was just wearing steet clothes. What exactly did he plan to do? Why’d he think this was ever a good idea?
With two felony counts, Leib might have a long time to think about his actions, and explain their motivations.
