Two Sheboygan County teens were injured after the decided to empty a bullet casing using power tools. The heat created by the tools ignited the powder, causing a minor explosion. Bam!
The incident occurred on Monday when Benjamin G. Fisher, 18, and a 17-year-old friend decided they wanted to empty the powder from a bullet casing. The originally tried to get the powder out by prying the bullet with a pair of pliers but when that didn’t work, they cut the tip of the bullet off and drilled into what was left so they could pour it out.
The friction created while the drill bit was pushed into the bullet caused heat to build up, igniting the gun powder the moment it made contact with the bit.
The 17-year-old, a Sheboygan Falls resident who was operating the drill, suffered powder burns to his face and hands and a scratch to the surface of his eye, but will have no permanent injuries, Adams said. Fisher, who was holding the base of the bullet with a pliers, suffered superficial powder burns to his face.
What were they thinking? Were they really that ignorant of the fact that heat ignites gunpowder? When questioned about the purpose of extracting the gun powder, the teens said they had no use for it and were planning on saving it until they needed it. They were trying awfully hard to get it out though. I doubt they had no plans for it. Oh well, at least they learned a lesson…I hope.
