Let’s Hug It Out

Students at Shepard Junior High School in Mesa, Arizona spent 20 minutes hugging and chanting outside of their school in protest of new public display of affection rules, particularly ones against hugging. What are some of these rules? Acceptable “public displays of affection” include:

  • Stopping and talking in the halls (but moving to the side to allow others to pass), holding hands, and linking arms. Scandalous!
  • Shaking a friend’s hand and patting him on the back in a “man hug”. Where’s the allowance for a “woman hug”?
  • Hugging no longer than 2 seconds. Teachers and administrators have been given stopwatches in order to more effectively enforce this rule.
  • Respecting other people’s opinions and values. Glad they clarified this rule, students were unsure whether or not they could respect each other.
