Jimmy Wales, creator of a little site called Wikipedia that lets you “look up stuff”, recently broke up with his girlfriend Rachel Marsden, a right-winger from Canada. What happens in Wikipedia stays in Wikipedia… before being made freely available to the world of course. The sordid details, chat logs, and oh my, a 24 hour “website design feedback session” in a D.C. hotel…
Jimmy Wales and Rachel Marsden first started talking to each other because Marsden was unhappy with the words on her biography page, as she led a life ful of controversy being a right-wing commentator on national TV (Fox News). They chatted it up awhile (transcripts here), before agreeing to meet in DC for a weekend. Obstensibly, that weekend was for talking about the website, but ended up in “24 hours of marathon sex” in the words of Marsden.
On March 1st, Jimmy Wales issued this statement concerning his “relationship” with Marsden. In it he claimed that he was no longer involved with Rachel Marsden, and that he had never intervened inappropriately to redraft her “Wikipedia biography” (are there any other kinds?). He complained of a “few gossip websites” that have decided that his personal life is of interest. Well, we aren’t a gossip website, but we peruse them! At ITR we believe him when he says that there was no conflict of interest, and he acted as he should have.
Oh snap! E-drama taken into reality. We are going to try to coin a new term now, Wikidrama, drama that occurs on Wikipedia or any other website using that platform. Yeah, it’ll catch on.
If you find yourself not really caring about the personal life of Jimmy Wales, and wondering why others care, well you are not alone. It’s really a private thing, and should not really be public right? But on the web, word gets around fast, especially when those words are on Wikipedia. ITR applauds Wales though, because she is a Fox News fox for sure. It’s odd how these right-wing commentators can be so aurally unappealing but somehow on occasion visually appealing right? Left-wingers are often left with girls with hairy legs and deeper voices than their male counterparts…
