China, land of well over a billion people, is in the “midst of a sexual revolution,” in which more relaxed governmental restrictions and rising prosperity are slowly changing the attitudes about sex. Instead of sex being a tool to create another cog in the Communist machine, the Chinese have discovered sex is actually pretty fun. What this means for their already large population remains to be seen…
Is there real change in the sexual attitudes of China? You bet you Yuan there is. 60 to 70 percent of Chinese have had sex before marriage according to recent students, which is up from 15 percent just a decade and a half ago in 1989.
There are still hang-ups though. For example, “xing,” or the Chinese word for “sex” is not spoken in public or with strangers. Even though many feel liberated sexually, much of this “liberation” is taking place in seedy motels and back alley bars, away from the public eye. This has resulted in some problems, particularly because public sex education in China does not match the growing rate of sexual behavior. For example, high school girls make up 80 percent of the patients at Shanghai abortion clinics during school holidays (obviously there is no better time to do that!). Abortions are readily available and a perferred alternative to the shame of giving birth to a child out of wedlock.
With millions upon millions of people already living in China, the discovery of sex as fun might cause it to grow even more. Interestingly however, as countries and people become more prosperous, they often have less children (i.e. America), and as China is moving in that direction the population effect may be minimal. Hopefully the schools and public in China become more aware of the risks of this increasing sexual behavior (STDs, pregnancy) and educate their young people.
