This woman makes men do crazy things, like shoot presidents, mail bomb threats, and other minor stuff like that
Jodie Foster. She played her first significant role in Taxi Driver in 1976, and still appears in major motion pictures today. She has won two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes for decades of solid work in movies spanning a wide variety of genres. But all that popularity has its costs… and one of those costs are the insane stalkers. Let us tell you about the top three craziest Jodie Foster stalkers (because having more than 3 exceptionally crazy stalkers is pretty much excessive, even for a popular actress). For some reason, Jodie has been really good at attracting exceptional nutjobs however… men who’ll do crazy things to impress Jodie. It’s so prevalent that there are even spoofs.
1.) John Warnock Hinckley Jr.
On March 30th, 1981, John Warnock Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate US President Ronald Reagan in Washington DC. He was found not guilty however, by reason of insanity. Why? Because he wanted to assassinate Reagan in order to impress Jodie Foster…
Hinckley became obsessed with Jodie Foster after the movie Taxi Driver, in which Jodie Foster played a child prostitute running away from her picturesque subarban life. When Foster began to attend Yale University, Hinckley tried repeatedly to develop contact with Foster through letters slipped under her door and telephone calls, but failed. Eventually he decided that murdering the President of the US would put them on an equal level and impress her.
Fortunately Hinckley failed to finish his plan, but it obviously left Jodie Foster quite shook up, hounded by numerous paparazzi. Hinckley considered it “the greatest love offering in the history of the world.” He currently remains in hospitalization but has been allowed small visits to his home under parent supervision.
2.) Michael Smegal
With a name that conjures up images of the gray and ugly creature from Lord of the Rings, Smegal deserves the number two spot on Jodie Foster’s stalker list. He was arrested in Massachusetts Tuesday, March 11th 2008 for mailing a bomb threat to the Los Angeles airport in a hand-written letter.
Smegal had mailed hand-written letters to various local Los Angeles airports that he believed held offices of the “Screen Actors Guild,” which he was upset with for disparaging remarks about Jodie Foster. He was arrested and faces up to 10 years in jail and a quarter-of-a-million dollar fine if found guilty.
He had been stalking Foster for a few years before coming up with this great scheme to “impress” Foster. In October 2004 Jodie Foster began to receive packages and letters from a mysterious man, and a federal agent helped Foster locate the man. Smegal apparently promised to stop, but his obsession with Foster did not. The letters to the airports contained the words “Jodie Foster S.”
3.) Edward Richardson
Edward Richardson is the “forgotten” Jodie Foster stalker, who had his thunder stolen by John Hinckley Jr. Like John, Edward stalked Jodie Foster while she was still a student at Yale University, and claimed to have followed Foster with a loaded gun. He planned to shoot Foster, but in his words decided that she was “too beautiful to kill” and instead decided to claim he planted a bomb in Foster’s dormitory, and demanded that Hinckley be freed. He wrote a death threat to Foster and Reagan, but was soon arrested armed and dangerous. He’s number three because honestly, all he did was try to ride Hinckley’s crazy, crazy coat-tails. Hinckley actually did something… [really crazy].
Apparently, thanks to these three “enjoyable” stalking incidents, Jodie Foster has a safe room in her house to protect her and her family. Imagine dealing with guys like this.
