Job interview

Have you interviewed a person or seen someone going to an interview who was obviously unprepared, i.e. the person was dirty and unkempt, showed up in shorts, had an attitude, etc? Careerbuilder.com conducts an annual survey of the craziest job interview mistakes. 3,061 hiring managers and human resources employees from around the U.S. participated in the survey and 10 were chosen as the most outrageous ones. Among them were people who went into the interview room sniffing their armpits. Gross! Read the top 10 list below.

- Candidate answered cell phone and asked the interviewer to leave her own office because it was a “private” conversation.

- Candidate told the interviewer he wouldn’t be able to stay with the job long because he thought he might get an inheritance if his uncle died — and his uncle wasn’t “looking too good.”

- Candidate asked the interviewer for a ride home after the interview.

- Candidate smelled his armpits on the way to the interview room.

- Candidate said she could not provide a writing sample because all of her writing had been for the CIA and it was “classified.”

- Candidate told the interviewer he was fired for beating up his last boss.

- When an applicant was offered food before the interview, he declined saying he didn’t want to line his stomach with grease before going out drinking.

- A candidate for an accounting position said she was a “people person” not a “numbers person.”

- Candidate flushed the toilet while talking to interviewer during phone interview.

- Candidate took out a hair brush and brushed her hair.

The worst mistakes people often make are showing up unprepared, talking trash about their previous employer, acting like an arrogant @$$, and dressing inappropriately, which for the record should be as professional as you can be.

You’d think people would be more aware of how to act and dress when showing up to an interview. Seriously, there’s so much information on the topic on the Internet that showing up looking and acting like a fool is completely inexcusable. Anyone have interesting interview experiences they’d like to share?
