A sample cover of a greeting card designed for prisoners
With about 1% of the adult population in America behind bars, one Los Angeles company saw an opportunity. Hallmark might have cards for nearly any occasion, but Three Squares Greetings focuses on greeting cards for inmates. Attorney Terrye L. Cheathem noticed the open space in the market and started the company to fulfill the greeting cards needs of the “more than 2.5 million people incarcerated in the United States today.” Aww… Cheathem’s brother-in-law’s 11 month prison term was the inspiration for the idea, since finding an appropriate Hallmark card proved difficult. She complains that “there weren’t any cards on the shelf that said anything like, ‘Hey, you must make better choices,” which is probably true.
The cards vary from the kind: “We are all praying for you while you do your time,” to the less than kind: “You had the choice to be ‘naughty or nice.’ And you chose… Oh well, now you have to do your time.”
The stores are only in a handful of stores right now, but you can buy them online. You can see some of the greeting cards just for prisoners at their website. They are not the only prisoner greeting card card service out there either! Maybe Hallmark should get in the action? Probably not going to happen is it…
