When Ethan Wade received his McDonald’s order he noticed there was something wrong with it and went into the restaurant to tell the cashier. Upon seeing Ethan, a little person, the cashier ran away from him screaming, yes, screaming. Now Ethan is working with a lawyer to try and get McDonald’s to give their employees proper disability awareness training.
The employee at the McDonald’s located in Greenville County, South Carolina was not paying attention and had her back turned to the register when Wade approached her. Upon hearing the man and turning around, she saw him and
“threw her hands up in the air, started yelling ‘Oh, my gosh! Oh my gosh!’ and ran to the back of the restaurant, continuing to yell as she was in back of the restaurant.”
Another employee went to see what the problem was, thinking the Wade was holding the place up, and was surprised to discover what the real problem was. The employee that screamed claims she has a fear of little people but if that were truly the case, what was she doing working at the register. Of course the number of people that are little people is small in comparison to the total number of people out there so actually interacting with such a person is pretty unlikely but the fact of the matter is that it was still a possibility.
Wade eventually got to speak with the woman and had this to say about it:
“The employee had stated to her, ‘Imagine if you saw a snake or a spider, how would you respond?’ And that employee said she understood that. And I said, ‘That’s unbelievable. I am a human being.’”
“How could you compare the fear of a snake and spider to a human being? That makes no sense to me,” Wade said. “I’ve seen kids kind of react like that. Understandable. But grown adults to act like that? That’s just not acceptable.”
The restaurant owner and franchise had nothing to say about the matter even though several news stations have called asking for comment. Making matters worse, Wade never got his order corrected and no one ever apologized for it. Wade insists he has no intention of filing a lawsuit with the company but would like them to train their employees better. Hopefully McDonald’s takes this guys complaint seriously. They pretty much lucked out with this guy’s desire not to file a lawsuit because chances are they’s lose. We’ll see how all this pans out though.
