What’s the natural response to pornographic material being banned from your country’s internet? Well, for some of the technically inclined in Indonesia, it was hacking into the official information ministry’s webpage to sound of on their opinions. The country has been divided over vociferous debate concerning pornography, a serious “hot button” issue in the Muslim-majority nation.

The website was hacked to say “Prove that the law has not been made to cover government stupidity,” and was accompanied by a “mocked-up photograph of a local information technology expert, who has been advising the government on the new law, depicted with a bare chest.”

Unfortunately for the hackers, the government quickly fixed the problem by removing the message and returning the web site to its normal state. The hackers might not be found, but anyone found guilty of transmitting pornographic material on the internet in Indonesia faces up to six years of prison and a 1 billion rupiah fine ($109,000).

A new bill that has yet to be passed would push even greater changes on Indonesian society. Drafts of the bill contained “provisions that could jail people for kissing in public and criminalize many forms of art or traditional culture that hinge on sensuality.”

We at ITR are thankful to be in a Western state, we might not be big fans of pornography, but we definitely don’t think it should be banned or prohibited.
