Talk about a bad landlord: threatens family for deceased daughter’s apartment rent

March 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Kevin and Margaret McCann from Northern Ireland have been grieving since they unexpectedly lost their 19-year-old daughter, Shauna, in January. The Liverpool Hope University student had rented a private apartment up until her death and now the landlord wants to family to keep paying rent or else face legal action.

The management company, Brownlow Property Management, is threatening to take court action if the family does he pay the £866 rent for March to June. The family is obviously pretty upset that management company is pestering them about the rent because not only are they grieving their loss, they also have to deal with all the expenses incurred by the funeral.

“Her sudden death has devastated us. We are trying to the best of our ability to come to terms with the loss of our precious daughter. This whole issue has caused us undue stress and worry.”

In an effort to show how accommodating the management company is, a company spokesman recently had this to say:

“We do not feel we are being callous or unsympathetic towards Mr McCann,” a company spokesman said.

“We have extended our commiserations to Mr McCann both verbally and in writing.

“We have also from the outset, verbally and in writing, offered Mr McCann the opportunity to spread the burden of the payments over as many months as his family budget permits.”

Well in that case, what’s the deal with the family? The management company already expressed “sympathy” for the loss, so now it’s time to pay up. Of course the management company is a business and it needs to make money but making money like this is pretty low. It was really nice of them to offer a payment plan too. That’s just what this family needs to make the blow slightly better. It’s ridiculous this company is trying to pull this crap. It’s likely the company refuses to forgive the debt to use the family as an example for anyone planning on dying while under contract; you’re still going to pay up! At his point it’s pretty likely they’re going to spend more on damage control than they would have lost by just forgiving the debt. Serves them right.
