Marine throws himself on a grenade, and survives

Matt Croucher
(BBC News) - Lance Corporal Matt Croucher

Lance Corporal Matt Croucher was a Royal Marine fighting for Britain in Afghanistan when someone tripped a Taliban booby-trap grenade. Croucher didn’t even hesitate, jumping on the device to shield his comrades who were diving for cover. Croucher intelligently used his backpack in an effort to absorb the blast, and even though that was blasted over 30 feet away he only suffered a bloody nose and shock. Wow.

Because of his bravery, his comrades suggested to his commanding officers to consider him for the Victoria Cross, which is the United Kingdom’s highest military honor. The Ministry of Defence is considering him for the reward.

We at ITR hopes he wins that reward, because his quick thinking not only saved his life, but the lives of his comrades. It takes a lot of guts to jump on a grenade, and he was smart enough to even save himself.
