A new surgical procedure has the potential to give people of short stature a quick fix to their problems. The surgery has the ability to add up to 5cm, or approximately 1.9 inches, to a person’s height all with only some local anaesthetic. There is somewhat of a downside though, it involves a head implant and no, it’s not some kind of ultra-futuristic robotic chip that messes with your brain, although that would be awesome.
The surgery was developed by Dr. Luis de la Cruz from Madrid, Spain. The surgery basically involves placing a silicone implant in the side of the recipient’s head. The plus side of doing so is it is an outpatient procedure which means you go home the same day as the procedure. Also, since it’s a local anaesthetic the drugs have no effect on other parts of your body making impairment unlikely. The doctor that developed the procedure says the surgery is meant for people who are normally too short for jobs with a minimum height requirement. Would that even be legal in the US? I doubt it but maybe this will be beneficial for our readers overseas.
Among the beneficiaries of the surgery are police officers, flight stewards, firefighters, etc. The cost of the operation is $8500 which quite frankly seems a little much. The doctor is likely taking advantage of the fact the people who need the surgery need it for their careers. He’s already carried it out on 17 people though so there’s obviously a demand for the operation.
Even though the operation has its obvious benefits, we just don’t know about a surgery that inserts a silicon head implant into the side of your head. How does it work? It’s likely is works by injecting the implant with more silicon at the recipients request. If that’s the case then isn’t there a bump on your head. Really, the thing works by making your head taller, by 5 cm! Is that even a good idea? We suppose it’s better than the alternatives though. Gimmick pills that do the work and surgeries where they break your legs, insert pins, and slowly pull your legs further apart so the bones grow and fill in the gaps, forcing you to use a wheel chair until the bones are strong enough for you to walk on. Hmm…we guess it is better than the alternatives.
