Brain Havel, a relatively new teacher at 22, has been charged with child abuse for a really stupid choice. He was teaching English on March 14th when a student arrived late. Instead of making the student do sit-ups or push-ups, the teacher allowed other students to punch him. Seriously.
The Delta interim Police Chief Roger Christian stated that in the class, “the disciplinary process was X amoung of sit-ups or push-ups in a certain amount of time. [The student] either wouldn’t or couldn’t complete them.” So when classmates volunteered to implement their own punishment, the teacher apparently agreed.
10 to 15 students took turns hitting the boy, in probably the worst display of educational discipline ever. Havel resigned, shockingly, after the incident came to light. The boy that was punched wasn’t seriously hurt or needed medical attention, but we still don’t agree with the teacher’s actions. Discipline should be administered by the teacher, and shouldn’t take the form of punches anyways.
We believe that what probably happened is that the young teacher was momentarily overwhelmed when the student wouldn’t complete the punishment. With few options remaining, Havel wanted to maintain control of the class and thought that accepting the suggestion of the kids would help facilitate that. Obviously he’s now out of a job and might struggle to find a new teaching job. That’s what you get for doing something so ill-advised.
