Mary Frances Stone was walking to her mailbox in 2006 when a 1990 Ford pickup truck ran her over. She suffered some fairly serious injuries, including a broken pelvis, resulting in thousands of dollars in medical bills. The twist? The driver was “Ranger,” a German shepherd, and the truck was a police truck assigned to Officer Taylor Finder of Ogden, Utah.

Mary Stone asked for over half-a-million dollars from the city, but the city’s insurer settled with her for $300,000. She wanted more, but was fairly happy with the results. The Ogden city attorney on the case said that it was a “fair resolution,” and even the police seemed to agree. Police Chief Jon Greiner stated that “it’s too bad she suffered injuries as a result of this.”

Taylor Finder and other police officers were in Stone’s neighborhood because of a call, and Taylor had left Ranger in the bed of the truck. The ambitious German shepherd jumped into the front seat and put the idling truck into gear, before directing the truck at Stone trying to get her mail. Maybe he confused her with a mailwoman?
