Teen claims students beat her up over anti-illegal administration poster. Security cameras say otherwise

The girl who cried wolf

13-year-old Melanie Bowers was supposedly beat up by a group of Latino students over a poster Melanie was carrying which read “If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration”. After the purported attack, Bowers told school officials 20 students surrounded her while 3 others attacked her over the class project. Officials gave the students in-school suspension, although initial reports claimed they were suspended as a result of the allegation, but school officials were completely shocked when they saw security footage of the incident.

Security footage of the “attack” show some students walking past Bowers and one taking the poster in a “snatch-and-grab” theft. Afterwards, Bowers is seen scratching her own face and arms in order to claim she was attacked by students. What a stupid, stupid girl. Making matters worse are the supposed “witnesses” that saw three Latino students making physical contact with “their white classmate”.

Bowers admitted she made the whole thing up after officials told her of the tape. Her parents sent a written apology to the school for their daughter’s lie. Despite the fact the girl made the whole thing up, Superintendent Fred Hayes said the three students deserved being suspended. Apparently, the act of taking the poster away from Bowers deserved suspension. In fact, only one took the poster, the others are guilty of encouraging the act. Hmm…that’s interesting.

Not surprisingly, the incident caused an outcry across the nation, especially given the current debate on illegal immigration.

Hayes had said that the district received messages from people well outside Athens, a city of 12,000 about 70 miles south of Dallas. He had said that “some of these people are irrational in some of the e-mails that they’ve been sending me about these young people.”

Given the circumstances, the school district is considering placing Bowers in another school. This was a pretty stupid move on the girl’s part though. What was she trying to accomplish by saying she got beat up? Wasn’t she aware the school had cameras? The kids that took the poster away are at fault too since they could have just ignored the darn poster. Bowers should definitely consider looking into psychiatric help. It’s always a bad sign when someone is willing to hurt themselves. In interviews with news agencies, Bowers claimed the students threatened to rape her as well. One thing to always take in mind, when you’re lying, the LAST thing you should do is tell the media. It makes you look like a huge jackass when you’re caught lying. Charges are expected to be filed against Bowers.
