Persistent perspiration prompts premature expulsion from gym

Man sweating profusely

Andy Heatman has a sweating problem, probably the same problem many throughout the world have to deal with, commonly known as hyperhidrosis. Suffers commonly have to deal with public embarrassment, the need to be extra hygienic, and are usually paranoid about their odor. Sufferers usually just deal with their problem and try to make the best of things but it can get especially difficult in places such as gyms. Sadly, Heatman’s sweating problem became an issue at Cheshire Lines Health Club in Maghull (UK) after staff told him he sweat too much and he could never come back as a result. By the way, it wasn’t a joke.

Has a sweating problem

Heatman was doing his usual workout when a gym staff member approached him.
He said:

“I was on the bike doing part of my usual routine when a member of staff walked over and sniffed me.
“I felt a bit paranoid but it was later in the week I was taken into the office to be told about the complaints.”

Once in the office, the manager told him he sweat too much. In addition, they said 15 complaints had been filed by members of the gym concerning the perspiration and he was no longer welcome there as a result. What gym has issues with people sweating? What kind of establishment are they running?

Heatman naturally thought it was a joke and returned to the gym later in the week but to his surprise, gym employees refused to let him go any further than the entrance. Disheartened and in a state of disbelief, Heatman left the establishment feeling horrible about himself. What a great motto for a gym! Walk in hoping to get fit, walk out feeling like crap. Yay!

Luckily, Heatman was able to find a gym closer to his home that he could go to. Upon signing up, he told the manager he was forced to leave his last gym because of his sweating to which the manager replied:

“I’ve signed up at Total Fitness (at Switch Island) and they just laughed when I told them about the complaints. They said that if I wasn’t sweating then I wasn’t working hard enough on their equipment.”

Heatman is demanding a month’s refund from the gym that kicked him out. Unsurprisingly, a gym willing to expel members for sweating is also tight with its money and is refusing to reimburse the man. The owner insists they did nothing wrong:

“We did everything humanly possible to avoid humiliating him.
“We have standards here as well as any other gym has standards.”

“Standards”, huh? What kind of “standards” are those? Rip people off and send them on their way? Send employees to sniff members for odor? Heaven forbid someone might sweat and develop on odor, we can’t have that! Hopefully Heatman gets more than he’s asking from the gym. He deserves it for the embarrassment. On a side note, how awesome is his last name? It completely fits with his story. His name is Heatman and he has a problem with heat, it’s freakin’ perfect. Ahh, the irony.
