Parents fight over what gang their 4-year-old will join

Do you know a couple that fights over which gang their child will join?

You can’t make stories like this up. The father of a 4-year-old toddler was arrested in Commerce City, Colorado was arrested for public disturbance after an argument with his girlfriend. Joseph Manzanares stormed into the Hollywood Video store where the mother of the toddler worked, and started knocking down displays and threatened to kill his wife. The outburst stemmed from an argument concerning what gang the toddler would eventually join: the Crips or the Westside Ballers Gang.

It’s no Romeo and Juliet tale, but Joseph Manzanares is a Hispanic member of the Westside Ballers gang, and his girlfriend is black and a member of the Crips. They found each other tolerable enough to have a child at a young age (Joseph Manzanares is 19, only 15 years older than his son) but can’t seem to agree which gang the child will grow up into. Should parents like this really be allowed to keep their children? It’s akin to arguing about which pimp will have your daughter, or what drug your child should be addicted too. It’s ridiculous!

We can’t break cycles of violence and poverty unless parents, particularly new ones, are educated and reasonable. This story is just sad, and we feel sorry for the child in question. Now his father may be out of his life, for good.
