A BP station in Wilmington, North Carolina caused traffic jams and crowds when an errant attendant accidentally set the price of premium gasoline to 35 cents a gallon, only $3 less than the normal price. Even though the price on the sign said differently, word-of-mouth, e-mail, and phone calls spread the word throughout the area. By the evening, cars were lined up to take advantage of the mistake and nearby roads were jammed up. Even after the price was returned to normal at around 6pm, people continued to arrive at the station in order to take advantage of the low price, and Wilmington police were called in to control and manage the crowds and traffic.
The gas station employees seemed a bit perplexed at the behavior of the drivers, with one, Shane Weller, commenting on how “people had been coming in all day stiffing us, not telling us nothing. They knew something was wrong because regular gas was still $3-something a gallon, and when have you ever known premium gas to be lower than regular?” Wow, it’s so shocking that they wouldn’t tell the attendant about the great deal they received!
We are going to go out on a limb and say that the employee who punched the price in wrong will probably not be working at the BP station much longer. The 10-hour mistake probably cost the station thousands of dollars, as cars lined up to take advantage of a unfortunate mistake. Weller, the loyal BP employee that he is, one again complained about the drivers. He stated that “there’s nothing illegal about being immoral, but I just don’t see how people could do that to us.” BP is a gas station, not a defenseless cat. That’s how “people could do that.”
Fortunately, the gas station pricing accident didn’t cause any real traffic accidents or incidents of violence, which is more than we can say for other struggles for oil gas.
