A Welsh study found taking vitamins can be more of a detriment than an aid to your health. The study was conducted in response to the growing number of people taking vitamin supplements in an effort to live a healthier life. In reality, taking vitamins can interfere with natural body defenses making it more likely you will suffer from an affliction such as cancer.
The study by Copenhagen University found that antioxidant supplements, such as vitamins A and E, may interfere with natural body defenses and may increase the risk of early death by as much as 16%.
“Paul Walker, chairman of the National Public Health Association Cymru, said: “We all need vitamins up to a certain level, but there is a misconception that taking more must be good for you.”
“The evidence shows that this isn’t true. Having too much does no good and, in fact, could do people harm.”
In addition, taking beta-carotene can increase the risk of early death by 7%, vitamin E increased it by 4%, and while many people take vitamin C in an effort to ward off the flu and cold, there was no evidence taking vitamin C supplements helps prevent getting sick.
“Catherine Collins of the British Dietetic Association said: “This study is deeply worrying and shows that there should be more regulation for vitamins and minerals.”
“The public can buy vitamins as easily as sweets. They should be treated in the same way as paracetamol with maximum limits on the dosage.”
Instead of taking vitamins, researchers suggest eating the recommended about of fruits and vegetables every day. You are more likely to put the vitamins in these foods to good use while you adopt healthier eating habits. We heard something similar to this a few months back but the study we heard of did not attribute supplements to an early death. Given the results, there is a high probability this study will be contested in the near future. The vitamin supplement market is very profitable and many companies, such as General Nutrition Center (GNC), stand a lot to lose if these results are true under normal, everyday conditions. For now, we think we’re going to hold off on taking our daily vitamins.
