Man spends years building boat, now he can’t get it out of his garden

John Melling from the UK started building his beloved 30-feet long Trimaran yacht five years ago, constructing a pretty sweet looking home-made boat in his back garden. The problem was a lack of foresight: the ship is so big that he can’t get it out of the garden! Melling, always the engineer at heart, claims that he knew it wouldn’t be easy to take out, saying that “it’s not as though I’m some idiot who got the measurements wrong and is not stuck with a boat he can’t move.” Unfortunately he was counting on a Royal Air Force airlift, “but apparently they don’t do that anymore.” Whoops.

The massive lightweight yacht is a labor of love for Melling, who built it for his and his wife’s retirement. They plan to go to Greece and relax in the Mediterranean. Before he does that however, he’s going to have to figure out how to get the boat out of his garden! Apparently he’ll just tear down his fences and use a trailer to move the boat. He surmises that it’ll only take an afternoon and a few friends to accomplish the task.

Melling raises a great point about the location of the boat. He said that “if I had built it on a more I accessible site, it would have meant me traveling miles to get out to do work on it, instead of being able to go down to the bottom of the garden to work on it, which has been much more convenient.” We wish him the best of the luck with his boat, seems like it was tough to make! It really is a great looking boat though, and an impressive do-it-yourself feat. You would just think that a man smart and dedicated enough to build it would have checked into easier ways of getting the boat to water.
