When one postal worker rushed to an Albany, NY home to drop off a letter, she never expected to be involved in a life changing situation. That’s what happened when Lisa Harrell went to drop off an express letter at an apartment building at 306 Second St. Since priority is given to such mail, Harrell decided to stop by the house 3 hours before her usual time. Her decision to do so resulted in her saving the life of a baby that fell out of a window.
Harrell arrived at the house around 11am to drop the letter off. As she approached the building, she noticed a baby in the upstairs window but thought little of it. After ringing the doorbell, Harrell felt something strike her arm and immediately stuck her arms out. She said it was instinctive but we have never experienced that before. Luckily, her instincts were incredible as she was able to catch the baby that had fallen from the window above her.
“I noticed the upstairs window open halfway,” she said. “The baby fell right into my arms. Everything happened so quick.”
Thank God she stood where she was. Can you imagine if she would not have been where she was? She would have seen the baby strike the concrete. That would have sucked. The mother, Brenda Morales, immediately ran outside, grabbed the child, and ran to another home up the street although she did manage to say thank you. Paramedics examined the child and found nothing wrong, she completely lucked out.
Shortly later, Morales returned home to find authorities from Children and Family Services who wanted to investigate the matter.
“According to police, Morales told detectives she was upstairs in the room with her baby and had put the child on the bed, which was up against the window. She had her back turned when the baby apparently crawled through the opening in the window.”
Although the police are not filing charges, the mother will have to answer to Albany County Child Protective Services. There is a chance the baby will be taken away from the mother but that depends entirely on whether they find her to be an unfit parent. Luck was obviously on the side of this baby. Chances are it would not have survived the fall had it been allowed to strike the ground. Kudos to the mail woman.
