Pierre is a happier penguin with his custom wetsuit
Pierre, a mighty 25 year-old penguin at the California Academy of Sciences penguin tank, once shivered on the sidelines as his friends frolicked in the water. Why was Pierre afraid of the water? Well as an old penguin, he was going bald, and his behind was not black but exposed, pale, and pink. Clearly the penguin was a little self-conscious about this, and probably very cold. The clever biologists at the Academy first tried a heat lamp, but eventually got the idea of putting the penguin in a wetsuit.
The wetsuit was made by Oceanic Worldwide, which normally just provides dive gear to humans but was enthusiastic about making a suit for a penguin. Pierre was fitted to create the suit. It closes with Velcro in the back and has openings in all the right places.
Pierre immediately took to the suit:
Pierre was outfitted with the suit about six weeks ago. Since then, he has gained weight, grown back feathers on his hind parts and is again acting like his feisty, alpha-male self.
Pierre is doing so well that his feathers have grown back. No one really knows why Pierre suddenly started growing back his feathers, but maybe the wetsuit bolstered his self-confidence so much that it turned back the tide of male-Penguin baldness! Pierre is slowly being weaned off the suit and is once again taking swims as nature intended penguins do: naked and loving it.
