Overweight inmate suing jail for not feeding him enough

When most 400+ pound people drop 100 pounds they rejoice, but not Broderick Lloyd Laswell. He’s an inmate awaiting a trial on murder charges, and after 8 months in jail he has lost over 100 pounds and now weighs only 308 pounds. He’s pissed and is suing the county for the weight-loss. Apparently the jailhouse menu does not satisfy his daily needs, giving him too little food. The food provided averages 3,000 calories per day however, which is on the far end of the “typical Western diet” of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day. This case may have weighty ramifications for jails around the United States.

Laswell, in his complaint, said that:

On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out. About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again.

If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight. The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death.

We would hardly call being fed 3,000 calories a day the same as “literally being starved to death.” Laswell is also asking that hot meals be served instead of cold ones. Next he’ll ask for a gourmet food court with several fast food outlet options!
