A young female student was walking when a man pressed a blade against her stomach and said, “Give it to me or I’ll kill you.” Alieu Dibba obviously scared the girl, who dropped her handbag and shoulder bag over a footbridge and ran away. Strangely though, Dibba later caught up with the girl and apologized for the theft and returned her bags. He even left his cell phone number and promised to “make it up” to her. What a nice robber right? The 37-year-old man was still arrested, and was jailed for 3 years. Apparently the girl wasn’t looking for leniency.
Judge Richard Foster didn’t seem to think the apology condoned the act, saying that “You went out on that night armed with a knife and preyed on an innocent victim. She must have been petrified.” The prosecutor in the case, William McGivern, emphasized the violent nature of the crime to secure the prison term. Dibba’s defense lawyer’s attempts to limit the sentence failed, probably because he framed the theft as a desperate robbery to feed a drug habit. Of course, judges aren’t that sympathetic to drug users…
We wonder if by leaving his phone number Dibba really wanted a date. That would have been incredible, so we wish it were true.
