Grand Theft Auto IV’s release was protested by many who felt violent video games convince people to commit crimes. Unsurprisingly, many in the video game industry adamantly deny this. But its release in the UK actually experienced a couple of violent attacks: a mugging and stabbing. Apparently videogames really can cause violence!
The first attack occurred at a Gamestation in London when a 23-year-old man standing in line outside was repeatedly stabbed by someone walking by. We guess he really felt like cutting in line. The stab victim was taken to the hospital and was later released. Later that night, an 18-year-old in Lancashire was mugged after he purchased a copy.
“Two robbers punched the victim to the ground and then kicked him, shattering his nose and jaw, according to the Manchester Evening News. They snatched the game before running away.”
Police are currently looking for the perpetrators but only have a vague description to go on. They are hoping people who witnessed the crimes will tell police. It was surprising to find the release of the game in the UK experienced more crimes than the US release. Maybe people there are more violent…nah. Regardless, it’s obvious the criminals were only preparing to play the game. We all know there’s plenty of stabbing and beating up involved. At least the people got away with their lives because we all know the people in the game rarely do.
Bonus: Another man was arrested after stealing a few copies of the game with mace. [Link] Nice.
