A New York man had to have his arraignment in the Suffolk County courthouse parking lot because he could not fit through the doors. Weighing in at a staggering 500 lbs, 44-year-old Bernard Musumeci and the court staff had to be moved outside after Musumeci’s lawyer informed the staff his client was unable to physically enter the building. They should have just taken him in through the freight entrance and up the freight elevator. Those things are meant to haul huge loads into and around the building, it would have worked for him.
When the arraignment began, Supreme Court Justice Robert Doyle said:
“The record should reflect that this arraignment is taking place in the parking lot of the courthouse,” Doyle said, “because of the severe weight problem this defendant has.”
Doyle read the man’s charges as Musumeci sat in the passenger seat of his pickup truck. They probably had him sit there so he wouldn’t drive off. Musumeci was on trial for selling counterfeit Gibson Les Paul guitars through his business, Oakdale Music, on eBay. He faces about 8 years in prison if convicted. Maybe he’ll use the opportunity to lose some weight while in the slammer. We previously wrote about a man suing his prison because they apparently are not feeding him enough, even though he’s getting the recommended number of calories each day. This guy managed to lose 100+ pounds in 8 months. Musumeci should look forward to his prison term. It might just give him a new lease on life. At the very least, it’ll allow him to get in most buildings. The big question is, will he have to lose weight to get into the prison? We’ll find out soon enough.
