What price should a parent put on their children’s well-being and happiness? Hopefully more than $1 right? Well after a night of drinking, Angelique R. Vandeberg was bet $1 by her boyfriend that she wouldn’t shoot her child with a BB pistol. Well, apparently Vandeberg really wanted that dollar, because after the boyfriend handed her the weapon she shot her daughter in the leg with a BB. In a sad attempt to cover it up, the mom told the daughter that the incident was a “family thing” and that she couldn’t say anything or else Vandeberg would go to jail. Ya think?

Immediately after the shooting, the boyfriend ran out of the house and drove away. The young girl was alright for a bit, but developed a stomachache and had trouble walking. A school counselor found out about the incident after seeing a circular bruise on the girl’s leg a few days after the shooting.

Right now Vandeberg is free on a $5000 signature bond, but faces up to three years in prison for a felony count of intentional child abuse. A county social worker had been working with the family for months, so this probably wasn’t the first example of stellar parenting in the house.

The mother told detectives that the story was a fabrication, made up by the girl to get her in trouble. She made up a story about the girl falling while riding her bike, in spite of how cliche it sounds. Of course, why would an 8-year-old girl make up a story like this? “Mommy shot me with a BB gun!”

Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco noted that alcohol will make some people do crazy things. He definitely did not buy the mother’s story:

Even if a kid’s upset with her parent, why would she make up a story of a BB being shot at her?” he said. “An 8-year-old child, it would appear to me, would not pick up on this particular avenue of vengeance.

That’s the truth. Someone who gets so drunk in front of their kids in the first place is probably not a fit parent. But shooting your kid with a BB gun? That just makes it blatantly obvious.

All for $1. You can barely buy bandaids with that.
