Abdolhadi Mirhejazi from Iran has created a new type of environmentally friendly vehicle that emits zero carbon emissions and reaches speeds of up to 49 mph, 80kph, or a consistent 12 mph, 20 kph. The vehicle is made up of a lightweight polycarbonate frame and contains a complex gear system that allows its whopping one horsepower to reach the above speeds. There’s a catch though, something Mirhejazi’s friends heavily criticized him for. The vehicle , known as the Naturmobil, is powered by a real live horse, hence the “one-horse power”.
The horse powers the vehicle by walking along a fiberglass treadmill in the back. The gears connected to the treadmill allow the horse to create enough power to turn the vehicle’s six motorcycle wheels and charge a small battery that powers the lights, electrical system, two LCD advertising screens on the vehicle’s sides, and a small engine designed to take over when the horse is tired. A small sensor monitors the horse’s heart beat and body temperature and automatically turns the treadmill off and switches to the motor when the horse gets too hot.
“It took me 26 months to build the vehicle in my workshop in Tehran. I got it patented by a special department in Iran after professors at universities there attested that it was a scientific invention.”
Mirhejazi has been touring with his vehicle and will soon be showcasing it in California in an attempt to garner support. He wants to build a version with four horses that can carry tourists around. This is a pretty good idea. His design takes the horse’s well-being into consideration and does not harm it at all. He designed the vehicle to collect the horse’s poop and provide it food. The thing is, we’ve had the privilege of walking and driving behind horses pulling carriages in the street and we’ve got to admit, it stinks a lot. How does he cope with the smell? We’re hoping he threw a fan into the design to deal with it.
