Get your tin-foil hats: Bluetooth tracking via cellphones

Many know about the debate over RFID technology, but it isn’t the only privacy threat affecting people in today’s world. If you are worried about your civil liberties and privacy you might want to change some settings on your phone. Bluetooth, a technology used to link various devices together and present in many modern cellphones, also allows anyone with a computer and appropriate receiver to track cell phones with Bluetooth on. In a test by Vassilis Kostakos at the University of Bath in the UK, a team was able to track 10,000 Bluetooth phones over a four month period with only a few receivers, able to easily “capture and analyze people’s encounters”. If you are worried, just turn off the Bluetooth on your phone until you need it (you might save a little battery too!).
