Land trust buys part of 11 backyards, tries to force owners to pay up

Residents of 11 homes in Pasco County, Florida are pissed off at 818 Land Trust for trying to sell them a strip of their own backyards. The land trust recently purchased the land that borders the homes from the city and then sent the residents registered letters notifying them that they were trespassing. They would have to leave the property, face legal action, or pay what the asked for.

The land trust’s full name is “818-239-2215 Land Trust”. The group bought the land earlier this year for $1,200 and then told the residents they had to lease it for $30 a month or pay $800. When called, the organization said,

“I would rather they not use it (the property) for free,” the trust said. “Aren’t all properties investment properties to some extent?”

The organization is allowing the homeowners to use the land while a settlement is worked out. There’s probably some sort of case they can use against the land trust considering none of the homeowners knew the land in question did not belong to them. There is a chance the land may have been included in the plans of the homes. The trust could always argue that was an error but an error affecting 11 homes is kind of weird, but not completely unlikely. It’s obvious this group saw the opportunity to make some cash and felt no problem trying to rip the people off. Hopefully something is figured out that doesn’t cost the homeowners too much. Looking at the picture, it’s really surprising the ownership of the land was up in the air. It’s obvious the land is part of these people’s backyards.
