The owner of a tortoise called 911 after the animal got stuck under lawn furniture. The tortoise was in the owner’s backyard when it got daring and crawled under the chair, which then collapsed on top of it. The owner made the frantic call asking for assistance because she was afraid she’d hurt the animal. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to free the beast from the claws of the dreadful chair.

Fireman Matt Furber arrived at the Essex home to aid in freeing the poor animal. He chose not to turn on his truck’s lights or siren in order to avoid drawing attention to the situation. The last thing he wanted was to distress the animal by making unnecessary noise. The fireman was able to saw one of the chair’s legs using a hacksaw, releasing the animal. Once freed, the owner coerced the animal away from the death trap.

The fireman said the animal looked fine and there didn’t seem to be any injuries.

He added: “I did look in our guidelines to see if we had anything on trapped tortoises – but we didn’t.”
