Throughout many countries, laws restricting fishing require anglers to “catch and release” endangered fish, fish over/under certain sizes, or fish caught above the legal limit. However, this will be banned in Switzerland starting in 2009, when fishermen will be asked to stop doing “catch and release” fishing and start giving “sharp” blows to the heads of fish with blunt instruments. Essentially, fishermen who catch fish will be required to kill the captured fish with something like a club, rock, or empty beer can, and not allowed to release them back into the wild even if they don’t want to eat them (for example, recreational fishermen). Do fish feel pain?
