The whole border fence debate just got a bit weirder. A new Department of Homeland Security plan intends to slice through the Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course in Brownsville, Texas, relocating it to the Mexican side of the fence. They’re basically moving a US business to Mexico. On another note, Mexico just got a tad bit bigger. Okay, not really.
The plan not only cuts off the University of Texas owned golf course but also a city park and a bird sanctuary. The reason for the decision is to save time and money by making the fence straighter at a weird bend in the Rio Grande. You’d think there would be a legal issue over the plan but apparently not when the government is the one who decides to build through your property. Planners are considering placing a gate in the wall to allow golfers through but this brings up other issues such as:
Will golfers need passports?
Will Fort Brown still have to pay state taxes?
Will President George Bush be able to use the new as a holding site for prisoners of war by claiming it’s not technically in the U.S.?
We personally think the fence will be ineffective but to each his own. It really is unfortunate for the owners of the golf course though. We wouldn’t be surprised if the business goes belly up but maybe it’ll become more popular since it’d be a weird place to golf.
