We’ve heard about some pretty asinine things in our day, but a man being jailed because his 18-year-old daughter failed to pass the GED is exceptionally asinine. Brian Gegner of Fairfield, OH was recently sentenced to 180 days in jail when his daughter Brittany Gegner failed to pass the General Equivalency Diploma test, or GED. This all stems back from a court order two years ago when Mr. Gegner was ordered to make sure that his daughter received a GED since she was skipping classes at her high school. The worst thing is that Brian Gegner didn’t even have control of Brittany at the time, because although he legally had custody, the daughter skipped school under her mother’s watch.
Brittany needs to pass the test to release her father, unless she wants him to spend the full six months in jail. The only section that she can’t pass right now is the math test. She apparently didn’t know that multiplying can cause serious problems either, as she already has a daughter that’s about a year-and-a-half old.
Both the mother and daughter seem surprised and aghast at the court’s decision, with the girl’s mother, Shana Roach, “they probably should have punished me if they were going to punish anybody.” According to Ms. Roach, Brittany has been attending school and is genuinely trying to better herself.
Because of all this nonsense, Brian Gegner might lose the job he has held for 15 straight years, because his daughter can’t pass a math test. Even though Brittany is an adult now and should be responsible for her own actions, she was a juvenile when the problems started and that makes all the difference. We understand that he was responsible for helping her pass the GED, but as she is legally an adult it’s not necessarily easy for him to really determine her educational future.
Poor guy.
