When class has quiet time, this teacher means it.

New York’s Flushing Fields Play School apparently takes quiet time very seriously. At least that’s what poor 4-year-old Angela Amedeo learned when she wasn’t quiet enough on August 22nd. The child’s teacher decided to shut her up by taping her mouth with Scotch tape for about 10 minutes. Although it doesn’t seem like much time, it’s plenty of time to traumatize a child. The ramifications of such an action are as clear as the tape used! Lawsuit baby!

The child’s family has filed a lawsuit against the teacher, school, and Department of Education because of the mental anguish the incident had on her . The child suffers from nightmares and occasionally cries when she thinks about what happened. The family claims they complained to the school and Department of Education, who said they would investigate the matter, but never got a response.

It’s one thing to ask a child to be quiet but it’s another to force it upon them. This teacher has some serious issues if she felt she had the right to place her hands on a child, let alone tape her lips shut. We know Scotch tape is weak and the child could have opened her mouth relatively easily but what you have to consider is the effect of having the tape placed by an authority figure. Hopefully the family has taken the opportunity to get her some help.
