For once, this ridiculous story does not come to you from Florida but instead from Michigan, where a judge from the town of Novi actually told someone on trial to kill himself. The man, 20-year-old Michael Robert Dickey, was on trial for his third underage drinking offense. While lecturing the guy, Judge Judith Holtz allegedly told him “that it would be cheaper, faster and less painful for the people who cared about him if he took his own life”. The judge is obviously passionate about the job. The transcripts reveal that it wasn’t just a mere suggestion, but provided various means to “execute” the advice.
Transcripts show that the judge suggested Dickey jump off a roof or slash his wrists. We understand she was probably lecturing him on the dangers of drinking, probably trying to get into his head that he could possibly kill himself but there is a stark difference between warning someone and telling someone to off themselves. In this case, it seems as if the judge meant to say the former but ended up with the latter. The court is currently investigating the matter. Sadly, this little outburst might end up costing Holtz but hopefully Dickey finally learned from his mistakes.
We understand that perhaps the judge wanted to convey to the teen that drinking like he did was akin to killing himself slowly, bringing up suicide to hammer in that point. But a judge should know better, that would never fly on Law & Order!
