In an effort to mark the chain’s 35th anniversary, Starbucks decided to bring back its old school, albeit now a bit modified, logo for a couple of weeks. Company spokeswoman Bridget Baker said modifications were made to the logo as a result of consumer feedback. “We feel it’s appropriate,” she said.” Regardless, a Christian group from San Diego has decided the new logo is in poor taste… kind of like Starbucks coffee…
The supposedly 3,000 member strong group claims the retro logo depicts a woman with spread legs.
“The Resistance says the new image “has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute,” Mark Dice, founder of the group, said in a news release. “Need I say more? It’s extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves Slutbucks.”
Eh, it looks more like a deformed mermaid to us but to each his own. The group is calling for a nationwide boycott of the product as a result. Starbucks has no intention is pulling the campaign though because they feel the logo is entirely appropriate, citing the origins of the logo as evidence:
“[Creative partner Terry Heckler] poured [sic] over old marine books until he came up with a logo based on an old 16 Century Norse woodcut: a two-tailed mermaid, or siren, encircled by the store’s original name, Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spice. That early siren, bare-breasted and Rubenesque, was supposed to be as seductive as coffee itself.”
The thing is, for a company selling a luxury item, i.e. “premium” coffee, and the fact their sales have been dropping lately given the state of the economy, it would be a pretty bad time to piss people off, don’t you think? We know they already poured money into advertising but they might want to consider pulling it if it has the potential to drop sales. On the other hand, they could probably just ignore it considering the group is obviously bored and just wanted something to complain about.
