31-year-old Alvaro Alvarado-Amarias was sentenced to three years probation, as opposed to three years in prison, as long as he doesn’t do anything stupid. An example of something stupid would be to threaten to kill someone for trying to join another band. Actually, that’s exactly what happened when Ervey Ruiz told Alvarado-Amarias said he was switching to another mariachi band. Who knew these musicians took the job so seriously? Who knew mariachi bands could be like gangs?
Ruiz decided to leave the group, Toros de la Sierra, because it apparently focused more on getting hammered than practicing. As a result, Ruiz decided to switch to a more promising group, prompting Alvarado-Amarias to hold Ruiz at gunpoint for five hours and threatening to kill him. Alvarado-Amarias was “originally charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment and assault, Alvarado-Amarias pleaded guilty to menacing.”
Wow, at least the guy is dedicated, right? You’d have to be to threaten to kill someone. It seems like this band is kind of like organized crime, once you’re in, there’s no going back.
