Drug lords have used a variety of disguises and methods to traffic drugs, but one of the newest and most interesting is the use of the elderly. Grandmas and grandpas of the world are not generally stereotyped as drug traffickers, but in recent years growing numbers have taken up the role of “drug mule”. Many of them have never tried or used the drugs they carry, driven to the trade by a need of money and the lucrative rewards. Retirees have been actively recruited by drug dealers who see them as valuable mules that are rarely suspected, though that might change soon. The DEA and state police agencies have started to more actively assess seniors and are keeping a watchful eye for elderly traffickers. Ruth Davis was one such trafficker, caught because she was speeding.
Ruth Davis, a 65-year-old Floridian woman was stopped and caught with 33 pounds of premium marijuana. She was stopped for speeding on the freeway and because of a smell he just couldn’t identify the officer asked to search the car, which she agreed to. He found a few suspicious locked suitcases in the trunk and called in a drug dog, who went crazy around the suitcases, that’s when she knew the jig was up. Medical debts for her blood disease and plastic surgery to reconstruct her daughter’s face after a horrific car accident drove her to the drug trade, and it was her sixth and final run from Miami to Manhattan.
Davis’ arrest means more than just jail time (she was sentenced to six months), because as she never became a full American citizen she’ll probably be sent back to Scotland. Even though she has been in America for the past 40 years, a felony drug conviction gives immigration officials more than enough reason to deport her. Now she’s left wondering whether or not she can get a refund on a burial plot she purchased in Miami.
