*NOT the missing anchor*
A 700 pound anchor, commissioned in 1949 and created by reservists, once located in front of the Naval Reservist Station in La Crosse, Wisconsin has all of a sudden disappeared. Well, at least that’s how it seems to area residents after someone inquired about its location. The station recently came under the direction of the Naval Reservist Oversight Committee after the station closed down in 2006 and remained unused until the group took control sometime this year. After noticing the anchor was missing, the committee head asked the city councilman where the anchor was. His response was “Uhh, it’s missing?”.
After asking the fire department, who also had no idea where it went, officials notified police to keep an eye out for a 6 foot tall gray-blue anchor. Police are currently investigating but are left scratching their heads wondering how someone managed to pull off the theft considering it was located in a well-travelled, residential location. After some investigation, officials were shocked to learn the anchor hasn’t been seen since December 31. How the heck did no one notice it was missing for almost 5 months? Wasn’t anyone in charge of caring for the property?
Although officials are hoping the anchor will be recovered, police have realized recovery is unlikely.
Lt. Bob Berndt “figures most likely the anchor — which is made of ferrous metal — was sold for scrap. Typically, police have been able to track metal thefts at the area’s handful of scrap recyclers, but Berndt said thieves have been traveling farther to recyclers to avoid detection as metal prices rise and thefts increase.”
Sadly, the committee had plans to use the anchor as part of a memorial at the site. This is now longer possible considering a key component is gone. So, if anyone manages to see a large anchor that fits the above description, please notify the La Crosse police department.
