Almost half-a-century ago, the ancient village of Sant Roma, Spain, was flooded to create a reservoir or water for the Catalonia region. Only the 11th century church’s bell tower broke through the water. But the area of Spain is experiencing a severe drought, and the full ruins have been exposed as the water has been used up. It’s drawn visitors from all over Spain, but the drought has forced officials to adopt emergency measures, such as shipping water from France and southern Spain. A desalination plant due to be completed in 2009 should remedy Barcelona’s water problems. It’s really amazing to see the difference that a drought can cause though, as it turned an artificial lake into what looks like a desert ruin.
