The Fulton County-City of Hickman Rescue Squad, which consists of 13 volunteer rescuers, demanded the city purchase them a new $89,000 truck. Sadly, the city cannot afford it and instead offered $10,000 to put towards a new vehicle. In a daring show of bitterness and unprofessionalism, the rescue squad unanimously decided to stop answering calls on Wednesday unless they get their new toy. Hmm…we understand the group is a volunteer force but is doing this really necessary?
As a result of their decision, the group’s chief fears the city will consider disbanding the squad. Obviously there’s no reason to keep the group around if they are unwilling to help people.
“While Gallagher says the county wants to keep the squad operational, Moss says raising the other $79,000 in a county that ranks first in population decline in Kentucky isn’t feasible.”
This better be one hell of a truck if they’re willing to risk people’s lives to get what they want. We fully understand they want to be better equipped to do their job but we think there were better alternatives to get the truck than to just stop working. They could ask for donations from community members, considering they provide a crucial service, try to get a discount from the seller/manufacturer, or try to fund raise. The group’s response tells us a lot about the squad.
