Would you pay $175 for a hamburger?

Expensive 175 dollar burger from Wall Street Burger Shoppe in New York

Hamburgers are a ubiquitous American icon, synonymous with fast food and good times. You can buy them for less than a dollar in many restaurants, and they have been usually the food of the common man. Well not this burger. The Wall Street Burger Shoppe just increased the price of their most expensive burger to $175. 20 to 25 are sold per month, apparently to men on Wall Street who haven’t noticed worries of a recession and economic troubles. The burger is stacked with a “Kobe beef patty, black truffles, seared foie gras, aged Gruyere cheese, wild mushrooms and flecks of gold leaf on a brioche bun.” Wow.

Why did the burger shop raise the price? Just so that Pocket Change, an online newsletter tracking the most expensive things in New York, would note their burger as most excessive expensive. The burger is apparently targeted to Wall Street workers who have had a “good day on Wall Street,” according to co-owner Heather Tierney. We think “exceptional day” would have been more fitting, because even the most wealthy of the world don’t like throwing money away all the time.

If you do find yourself at the Wall Street Burger Shoppe, we found much better options on their menus. They have a reasonably priced $4 burger which would probably fill you up just as well. If you are a bargain hunter, 100 of those bad-boys would only set you back $365 if you buy the “Party Monster” package. You get free party favors too, but you have to wait an hour. You might want to bring friends too.

Boulud’s DB Bistro Moderne has the closest competition to Wall Street Burger Shoppe’s overpriced special, with a $150 burger. That restaurant jabbed at Wall Street Burger Shoppe however, stating that the Boulud’s most expensive burger was not about the price but true quality. The best burger at Boulud will set you back only $32 if you leave out the truffles too. If you are looking for a completely unnecessary and decadent hamburger dining experience, go with that. $175 for one burger is just plain nuts.
