The Chinese government recently shut down online entertainment and games in order to mourn the victims of the deadly earthquake that struck the country. Obviously, some people out there might not have been too excited about the prospect but most simply sucked it up and dealt with it, except for Gao Qianhui who posted an online rant about the government’s decision and went so far as to say “Who cares about the earthquake victims?” Unsurprisingly, the Chinese government decided to step in and shut the inconsiderate woman up. I guess no more online gaming for her.
Qianhui posted a video online which shows her outside an online cafe condemning the government for its decision to only allow the Internet to be used for earthquake coverage. It’s not really too much to ask for considering the government’s resources are being spread thin to help victims but apparently that wasn’t good enough for the woman. In the video, Qianhui says she does not care about the earthquake coverage and continues:
“How many of you died? It was just a few,” Gao said. “China has so many people, anyway.”
Her video caused so much shock and outrage that Chinese police in the northern city of Shenyang arrested the woman. The government has not officially stated the law she broke, which is not surprising considering the level of censorship the government places on the people, especially on the Internet. This woman most likely just wanted attention. Of course, some people will claim she shouldn’t have been arrested but keep in mind the people of China do not have the same rights as those in democratic countries. Personally, although arresting her might have been a bit extreme, we can see why the government reacted this way. The earthquake was a tragedy for the country, one the nation will recover from for quite some time and expressing anger towards the victims was completely idiotic and insensitive and all because she wanted to play online games.
