A Japanese man has been arrested for calling a food company’s toll-free number 500 times over 16 months, costing the company almost 4 million yen or over $35,000 in phone bills for 3,100 hours of “free” calls. Why did he call so much? He just wanted to hear an automated woman’s voice, apparently for hours at a time. The detective working the case reported that the voice sounded normal to him, but the woman’s voice on the guidance tape “excited” the 38-year-old plumber. We don’t know if this is funny or sad, since we can’t imagine being so lonely as to take pleasure or solace from an automated voice. He could have just called those lines in the back of skeezy magazines, and he wouldn’t be in jail right now…
