Spam, the “delicious” and derided cheap lunch meat, is selling like hot-pork-cakes because of America’s economic difficulties. Whether or not America is officially in a recession or not, consumers are grabbing the blue pork-in-a-can product for its low cost. We have some problems with Spam, including the extremely high sodium content and questionable taste, but what is really surprising is that often Spam is more expensive than quality meat like boneless chicken breasts! Sure, we suppose it’s convenient to just open a can and have meat ready to eat, but does that outweigh the costs of dealing with hypertension in the future?
Food prices in America have been shooting to new highs because of inflationary pressure, driving some foods like bread and peanut butter up around 10 percent. Spam does have the advantage of being relatively cheap and storable without refrigeration, unlike non-canned meat.
Who is using Spam? Stay-at-home moms for one:
Kimberly Quan, a stay-at-home mom of three who lives just outside San Francisco, has been feeding her family more Spam in the last six months as she tries to make her food budget go further.
She cooks meals like Spam fried rice and Spam sandwiches two or three times a month, up from once a month previously.
We still think that buying meat in bulk and freezing it would save costs and give you higher quality meat, but to each their own. At least feed your kids tuna or chicken in can, sheesh!
Spam’s recent success is pushing Hormel Food Corp. to launch the first Spam national advertising campaign for several years, intending to further increase the sales of specialty products like “Spam Singles,” which might possibly be the grossest sounding thing in history.
